Students will read various fiction and nonfiction texts focusing on skills such as finding main ideas and details, cause and effect, inferencing, finding author’s purpose, and comparing and contrasting. Students will also build vocabulary through several strategies such as using context clues as well as Greek and Latin roots.
Students will study the parts of speech and demonstrate a command of the conventions of English grammar such as using proper capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. Students will focus on writing narrative, informative and persuasive essays.
Students will study American history beginning with Native American tribes and ending with Westward Expansion. Students will study topics such as the Age of Exploration, Colonialism, the American Revolution, the founding of the nation, and more. Students will learn how to research important topics in social studies using multiple resources and skills.
In the fifth grade math curriculum, we are applying the Archdiocese of Miami standards which have been adopted with the goal of better preparing our children for college or a job. The math standards cover the following areas: operations and Algebraic Thinking, Numbers and Operations in Base Ten, Number and Operations in Fractions, Measurement and Data, and Geometry. In the book My Math, differentiated instruction is included in each chapter to provide different strategies and resources to meet the needs of each student at different times and in different ways.
Most of the material is learned through the text work book, Science Fusion, online resources, various actives and a hands-on approach to learning in the science lab. Learning to think like a scientist is the foundation of fifth grade science. Our students will learn to use the scientific method and tools to investigate our world. The main areas of study are: Life science, Earth Science, physical Science, and Engineering and technology.
In religion, the priority topics will be on the Sacraments of the church, and the precepts of the church. In the book we are using, Christ Our Life, scripture is centered between the four fundamental themes of the Catechism of the Church, which are Creed, Sacraments, Morality, and Prayer. Catholic social teachings are also woven into each lesson, to encourage active participation in the faith.
